As one of the largest cities in the Midlands, Coventry plays an important role in the economy of the area. Unlike other cities worldwide, Coventry doesn’t have a specific sector upon which it relies. The city was reliant on other industries throughout its history but always managed to keep up with the times when an industry faltered. This is a photography company that are famed for their high quality work when it comes to taking wedding and portrait photographs. They are located in Warwickshire and are staffed by a young and enthusiastic team.

9: Ann Summers

This is a company that certainly caters to the naughtier side of human nature. Ann Summers is the UK’s largest seller of lingerie and adult toys. There are currently over 140 stores in the UK, Ireland, Spain and the Channel Islands. The first shop was opened in London in 1970 and expanded across Britain. The store has a large presence in Coventry with an annual revenue of over £100 million which has stayed steady throughout the recession.

8: Mission Foods

Although this is a company that has its headquarters in Texas, Mission Foods does have a branch in Coventry and has more than 6,000 employees in dozens of plants around the world. The company sells tortillas and products related to tortillas. It was founded in 1977 and started expanding from 1982 onwards.

7: Lotus Cars

As a mainstay of the motor industry, it’s no surprise to learn that there are several high quality car manufacturers still plying their trade in Coventry. This company also owns Lotus Engineering and was formerly owned by Romano Artoli before he went bankrupt in 1994. Lotus Cars was then bought by Proton who retain ownership of the company today.

6: E.ON UK

This is an energy company that has its headquarters in Coventry. It was originally founded in 1990 and was known as Powergen until 2002 until the company was acquired by E.ON. It deals with gas and electricity and is heavily involved with electricity distribution in the Midlands. Currently, E.ON employs more than 22,000 people.

5: Rolls Royce

This company has its headquarters in Derby but still has a large base of operations in Coventry. It was founded in 1906 and is famous for producing luxury cars. Because the company expanded in aerospace and defence, it started creating bigger and bolder projects. The RB211 jet engine was one such project which nearly crippled the company. As a result, it was split up with Rolls-Royce Motors becoming a separate company in 1973.

This company is the third largest supermarket chain in Britain and enjoys more than 16% of the market. Almost 147,000 employees work at Sainsbury’s which was founded in 1869. The company’s annual revenue is almost £20 billion and it trails behind only ASDA and Tesco in terms of supermarket popularity. As a result, the company is always hoping for new recruits with bright ideas who can help them regain top position.

This company is now jointly owned by The Gores Group and Siemens. It is one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies and is backed by the immense power of two corporate giants.

At one time, Jaguar had a huge influence on Coventry’s economy. It was founded in 1922 but only became known as Jaguar in 1945. It is now a subsidiary of Tata Motors, an Indian company. Although Jaguar’s influence in Coventry is no longer as large as it once was, the company’s official headquarters are still in Whitley, Coventry where luxury cars are designed. They are now manufactured in Birmingham.

1: Royal Mail

This is the UK government’s postal service which proudly serves the whole of Britain. It is a huge organization with more than 176,000 employees and has a large branch in Coventry. More than 84 million items are delivered by Royal Mail every day and the company’s revenue is in excess of £300 million. The service was actually founded back in 1516 when Henry VIII introduced a ‘Master of the Posts’ which was to eventually evolve into the Postmaster General office.

Although the motor industry is still an important part of Coventry’s economy, there are available jobs in every sector.
